trans-pagans:

So I know I’ve been gushing about this book on my other blog, but I just got Sex Is A Funny Word for my little sister, and here are all the reasons you should get this book for any 8-10 year olds in your life.

  •  Describes body parts in a way that’s totally gender neutral
  • Has a whole section on gender that talks about assigned gender vs how you feel about your gender, the fact that some people are intersex, and the fact that some people are nonbinary
  • Of the four characters that lead you through the book, one is nonbinary, one has two dads, and one is disabled
  • Discusses the fact that different cultures and families have different views and beliefs when it comes to nudity instead of assuming that everyone has the same values around modesty that Christians do
  • Uses the term middle parts instead of private parts because “any part of your body can be private”
  • Mentions that vulvas can be many different colors and not just pink.
  • Talks about asexuality and how not everyone feels attraction
  • The art portrays a lot of folks that aren’t always included in puberty books such as disabled folks, hijabi folk, fat people, poc, and gender non-conforming folks
  • The comic book style makes it a lot easier for folks with reading-based LD’s to get through it
  • Asks questions throughout the book that are intended to help start a dialog about sexuality and relationships between children and caretakers.

The book is super pretty to look at too! 10/10, would recommend for kids who are starting to explore these things.
