My headcanon for ghosts, which I’m sure a lot of people probably share through coincidental deduction, is that they can change shape as they please but the only form they easily hold for long or default to when relaxed is an approximation of the form they “feel” they would have. For some ghosts that might just be a picture-perfect human form with all their favorite clothes but for most it’s a little caricatured or abstracted, and it might incorporate any injuries that killed them or something they’re especially afraid of because that’s probably the single hardest thing to forget.
If they wander too far from a familiar place or other constant reminders of their life, they start to lose their memories and their sense of identity and degenerate to just a wisp or a blob, but some of them would rather do that anyway.
