FAVORITE MONSTERS #1: The Flatwoods Monster
The year 1952 was packed with UFO encounters all across the U.S. One of the most disturbing took place on this date, September 12, in Flatwoods, West Virginia. While inspecting a hilltop at night for what they thought was a crashed meteorite, Mrs. Kathleen May, her two sons, and four other boys–all ranging in age from 10 to 17–came across a “big ball of fire” and this hideous creature pictured here (from the cover of The Saucerian Bulletin, September 1959). The witnesses described it as a “fire-breathing monster, 10 feet tall with a bright green body and a blood-red face.” They were almost overcome by a strange suffocating odor, but they managed to escape. The official Air Force explanation: Mrs. May and the boys saw a meteor and were frightened by a barn owl! Don’t you hate it when you see an owl in the forest and mistake it for a 10-foot-tall glowing metallic monster?
