I’m already pretty tired of The Joker as an engine for increasingly dim attempts at edgy storytelling, but after seeing today’s reveal of Joaquin Phoenix’s version that looks partially inspired by John Wayne Gacy’s Pogo the Clown, I think we should just retire the character entirely for like a decade or so until this nonsense stops happening

Why is it always the Joker? Why isn’t there a series of increasingly edgy reimaginings of the Penguin?

It kind of reminds me of the time one of my coworkers at Kinko’s was trying to recreate that weird “WARBALARBA” noise that Arnold makes in the original Total Recall when he’s supposed to be suffocating at the end.  Sean, the coworker in question, kept just shouting it, then he stopped dead pan and said, “No.  It’s not right.” So he threw himself on the floor and started thrashing around going, “WARBALARBALARBA” and then stop and go, “No, it’s still not right.”  Eventually our manager just sighed and asked him to stand back up.

But that’s where Hollywood is at with the Joker.  Rolling around on the floor of kinko’s trying to imitate a ridiculous noise that no one cares if they get right nor not.
